Crying In H Mart Review Powell S Books 1 Bestseller I review crying in h mart by michelle zauner. it was a #1 bestseller at powell's bookstore in portland in december 2023. Crying in h mart is a skillfully written and deeply moving portrait of zauner’s mother and their close, and at times strained, relationship. it is also a rumination on cultural distance and the power of food to bridge the gap — it is a book that induces empathy for grief and hunger for korean cuisine in nearly equal measure.

A tender, well rendered, heart wrenching account of the way food ties us to those who have passed. a poignant memoir about a mother’s love as told through korean food. losing a parent is one thing, but to also lose direct ties to one’s culture in the process is its own tragedy. in this expansion of her popular 2018 new yorker essay, zauner. Beautifully written and heartbreaking, crying in h mart is one of my favourite books of 2023 so far. the real and raw emotions surrounding family, career paths, growing up, and grief are balanced out by descriptions of food that leave your stomach grumbling and mouth watering. it is a unique and powerful memoir that, in my opinion, is a must read. There’s a great deal of buzz around crying in h mart, so i succumbed to the fomo. although this is a story of loss and grief, i love the honest reflections, the descriptions of food shared, the memories triggered while grocery shopping, and various cultural aspects of the story. if i can’t relate to michelle’s love for certain korean food.
