The historic portsmouth naval hospital building was designed by architect john haviland (1792–1852) and built in 1827. it is a three story granite and freestone building on a 12 foot (3.7 m) basement. its form is that of a hollow rectangle, measuring 172 feet (52 m) wide by 192 feet (59 m) deep. the front facade features a 92 feet (28 m) wide. At least, that’s the local legend of “the ghost of building 1,” a peg legged confederate amputee who still roams the original 1827 structure of the portsmouth naval medical center. Footnote.? (1) in operation from 1804 to 1806, the building used as a naval hospital was at least two stories high contained between six and ten rooms. it was approximately 90 feet long and 50 feet wide. as are most of the structures, past and present, on the island of sicily the building was constructed of stone.
